在航空运输发展的早期，只有少数人能坐飞机，用它来运输货物在当时是很不切实际的。但用航空方式运送邮件却很现实，因为邮件重量很轻，却是各种信息的载体，其价值无法估量。所以航空邮递业的市场迅速被打开。当时欧美等发达国家的航空邮递业务成为空中货运的主要内容。20世纪20年代占美国空运业务的90％是邮件运送。到了20世纪50、60年代，公路、铁路及水路运输也蓬勃发展起来，一度普遍认为航空运输只能解决一些小件的比较贵重的物品的运送，不成什么气候。这种观念到80年代信息经济全球一体化大潮汹涌而来时迅速发生了改变。经济全球化对航空货运有巨大的需求。
